We went to the SIMS open day on Sunday and attended a talk on wobbegong sharks by Dr Kate.
Wobbegong sharks are the most numerous species in Sydney coastal waters. They do not bite unless provoked. Every wobbegong has a unique patterning on its skin. Dr Kate gets paid to scuba dive with wobbegong sharks in Cabbage Tree Bay, Manly every day of the week. I knew I should have paid more attention in Science at High School.

Retreat Reserve Clean-up

Volunteering is a whole new way of getting out there and meeting people. Here we are on Clean Up Australia Day. This year it was high tide and we waded and swam our way around the coves picking up the plastic waste from the rocks and branches and in the sand. Next year we are going to organise some kayaks to go even further around the foreshore - maybe as far as Sugarloaf Bay.
The after even bbq on the deck was talkative and light. We have grown in number this year to 15. Thank you for participating.

Bras

Sometimes I post a fashion entry. Today I would like to update you on the delights of getting refitted for brassieres. Which I believe is the proper french spelling. I sashayed into my local bra shop and headed for the tired and true Formfits - only they don't fit me any more so I put those back. "You need to try wearing a Fayereform bra," the shop assistant and personal bra fitter intoned. "Okay I think I am a 14DD but once I bought one of these on sale and it was a 16G." I replied. However, I thought to myself, that could have been postpartum. I was ushered back to the fitting room and tried this new style on - perfect. "You could also try one of these Elle MacPherson bras they are very popular but difficult to fit." "So I'm giving you a 14D, 14DD, and a 16DD. Show me what they look like on." "Aaah," she said "the 16DD is perfect it fits you well and doesn't pull around the back." I looked in the mirror my breasts looked like lop sided rock melons. "I think that today I'm going to be 16 yrs of age and take the 14." "But it doesn't fit you," she said. "I'll take the 14," I asserted. Only a woman of my age knows what it is like to go through this. It's not so much the thought of wearing a size 16 bra as the knowledge that other parts are size 16 as well. Therefore I will continue to wear size 14 and even 12s while I can.

Blaze Aid

Today Alex had the day off school. He had a scratchy throat and a little cold. That was fine by me, as I wasn't working today. Instead he got to come to my school and see their Blaze Aid concert. It was organised by Year 11 and 12. They were magical in the words and drama that was performed. There was shocking moments too, some strong language and a re-enactment of how they became a TAFE High School with a pantomine of a sperm and an ova. You had to be there. The songs and guitar playing was awesome. There were auctions of art and craft, mp3 players and I-tune cards, with the highest bid item being two tickets to a concert that Alex and I didn't quite catch the name of. The teachers got up and performed the ABC song - yes The Jacksons. Then it was all over. Alex and I stayed back to help pick up rubbish and stack chairs, then something really good happened the rock band started jamming again and played a Beach Boys medley and we danced.

Belongil

The Eastern Water Dragon is back. First I saw one of the babies on the path, running in that lop sided fashion, then skidding across the frog pond. It seemed to stop for breath and turned around to see me with it's over size puppy head. I was very pleased to know that there are more small belongils running around. The following day I looked down the yard and there was the big Eastern Water Dragon, with a red stripe across its sides. Big enough to let me know that I should stay out of it's territory. Now I want to know a lot more about this beautiful species - where do they nest and sleep? Do the babies hatch from eggs or are they born live? I didn't manage to photograph these two creatures, maybe next time....

Back to Basics

I thought that I should stay in touch with my blog and write about all of the things that are keeping me from taking photos and posting....
1. School went back
2. Autumn is gradually beginning to change the days
3. There are two autumn leaves on my driveway
4. Two of our boys started new schools
5. I returned to my favourite job
6. I still miss Purcell, and spend time patting every dog I meet
7. Australia has had a terrible week climate wise and lives and homes have been lost to fire and flood
8. The time's they are a changin'

This Sunday at 6am a special concert of Dawn Chorus will be held on the Sydney Opera House steps to raise relief money for the Fire Fighting Fund, all are welcome.
