Richard and I looked at each other, we decided that we were Sydney's oldest youth group leaders on this wintry June Friday night. We took the St John's East Willoughby Church youth group to ten pin bowling at AMF Hornsby. The noise and the lighting were indescribable. The kids had two games each and really enjoyed competing against the others in their lane. Sometimes God moves in mysterious ways.
We waited for the Samoan warriors to reveal their tribal tattoos on the stageAnd here they are at
Casula Powerhouse In addition there were Pacific Islander musicians, dance performances, Maori hangi, Samoan umu cooking, and the proud and masterful Greg Semu's photographs of Pacific Islander men well known in the roles they take within their communities and in NRL sport.
It was a good day to get into the City and check out the Leonardo Da Vinci exhibition from the Florence Museum. This will be the last time that the exhibits are shown in Sydney. Reproductions of all of Da Vinci's major oils and frescos are shown. As well as robotic models and the anatomical work. The exhibition is alive with the feeling of Da Vinci's hands and mind.
Paul Morgan Deputy Director of SANE Australia met me at the NSW Art Gallery to take my portrait and pick up a few other images for background detail We used the Australian collection for backgrounds and I road tested some of the looks with a self portrait - here a Whiteley landscape of Bathurst and also a late Nolan mountain landscape captured in layers of spray paint.
The pictures that Paul took will be edited to find one great shot that will be used in a new series of biographies from consumers on the SANE Australia website from August 2010. SANE Australia http://www.sane.org/ I am a SANE Australia Speaker and Consumer Advocate. I have worked on the Mindframe Project to educate film and televisionwriters about mental illness in the community and spoken in the corporate sector to promote awareness of how mental illness is perceived and this effect on the people who experience it. SANE Australia is a national charity working for a better life for people affected by mental illness through the formulation of national awareness campaigns, the creation of Stigmawatch, education and other initiatives.
This year's Winter Solstice is on 21st June 2010 at 9.28pm. After this time a little bit more sunlight comes back to the southern hemisphere every day.
We walked around the promenade to Shelley Beach from Manly, to catch the afternoon sun and to look at the ultramarine blue of the ocean. There were many snorkellers and kayakers out enjoying the water. Several sunbathers perched on the rocks. From Shelley Beach we walked up to the look out to see if we could spot any whales from the headland. Alas not. It was a good walk in one of Sydney's great locations to view the ocean from.
Charlotte is visiting from the UK. Today we took her to the Sydney Opera House for a closer look. It was a gorgeous Sydney winter day. We trekked through the MCA and the Botanical Gardens as well, finishing up the afternoon at Bondi Beach.
This afternoon the Tom Bass Sculpture Studio held an open afternoon. Sculptors were working on their modelling and refining. A documentary was being shown about his work in Canberra. A silent auction for several sculptures was being run. Books about Tom Bass and his work were for sale. A fund raising sausage sizzle was happening in the lane way. Music was playing and people were interacting with and talking about art. We met Elizabeth a sculptor who specialises in making busts for casting.
